Before Meesho existed, millions of Indian women were already running businesses. They just didn’t know it yet.
Homemakers in small-town Rajasthan. College students in Tier 3 cities. Retired families looking for extra income. They were photographing saree catalogues, sharing them on WhatsApp groups, collecting orders from neighbours, and delivering personally. No app. No investment. Just a phone and community trust.
Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal childhood friends from Meerut who met again as IIT Delhi hostel neighbours spotted this quietly happening during deliveries for their first failed startup, a hyperlocal fashion app called Fashnear. The app didn’t work. But what they observed during those home visits changed everything.
They didn’t invent social commerce. They built the infrastructure around something that already existed.
In 2016, they relaunched as Meesho short for “Meri Eshop,” meaning “My Shop.” The model was beautifully simple. Suppliers listed products. Anyone with a phone could browse the catalogue, add their own margin, and share with their WhatsApp network. Meesho handled packaging, delivery, payments, and returns. The reseller never touched the product and never needed a single rupee upfront.
Zero investment to start a business. That wasn’t a tagline it was the product.
The same year, Meesho became the first Indian startup selected for Y Combinator. In 2019, Facebook made its first-ever investment in an Indian startup and chose Meesho. In April 2021, SoftBank led a $300 million round valuing the company at $2.1 billion India’s first social commerce unicorn.
By 2024, Meesho had over 13 million resellers, more than 10 million of them women, and 187 million annual transacting users across India’s smaller cities and towns. In December 2025, they went public, raising $603 million in one of India’s most anticipated IPOs.
