What is a Plug Valve?
Plug valve is a type of valve that uses a cylindrical or tapered plug to regulate the flow in the pipeline with a through hole, known as the port that can be rotated within the valve body to either allow or block the flow of the fluid. They are simple in operation, provide quick response time, reliable sealing capacity which prevent leakage. They effectively handle a wide range of fluids including slurries and viscous fluids. How does the plug valve work?
The plug valve uses a cylindrical or tapered plug that fits into the valve body to control the fluid flow. The parts of a plug valve contain a body which provides the entry and exit points for fluid movement, a plug which is cylindrical to control the fluids flow and provide sealing capacity and when close, actuator or handwheel which is used to control the flow. When the valve is closed the plug obstructs the flow path by rotating, stopping the flow creating a tight seal and preventing leakage, and when the valve is open by turning it to 90 degree the plug moves to position the open channel to match the inlet and outlet, providing unrestricted fluid flow.
