You don’t need NEET to get into a GNM nursing course. That surprises a lot of 12th-pass students I’ve spoken to, because they’ve spent a year hearing about NEET scores and assume every nursing door sits behind one. GNM is a diploma. Colleges mostly go by your 12th marks and their own counselling.
What the course actually covers
GNM stands for General Nursing and Midwifery. It runs three years on paper, though some institutes still add a six-month internship, so ask which version your college follows before you plan the fees. GNM nursing leans hard on ward time. The syllabus mixes classroom subjects like anatomy and community health with hospital postings, and the postings are where people either fall for the work or quit. I’ve watched both happen.
Who can apply
You need a pass in 12th with English, at least 40% overall and 40% in English on its own, from a recognized board. Open school and NIOS candidates are allowed too. Science is preferred but not always compulsory, so an arts student shouldn’t give up before reading the college notice. Some colleges set a higher cutoff than the Indian Nursing Council does. A student with 42% can still get turned away somewhere.
Picking a Delhi nursing college
Recognition comes first. A GNM nursing college should be approved by the Indian Nursing Council and recognized by the Delhi Nursing Council, since your registration as a nurse and midwife comes through the state council once you finish. Skip that step and government hospitals won’t look at you. The RML nursing officer recruitment, for one, rejects applications at document check if the registration certificate is missing. People find that out late. Then there’s the hospital side. Ask where students do their clinical hours and how many patients each one really handles. A Delhi nursing college with a polished brochure and one small attached clinic won’t teach you much about a crowded ward. My honest view: take the college with the busier wards over the one with the nicer building. Visit on a weekday, watch the students rather than the reception desk, and talk to a senior if they’ll let you.
Fees vary too much for me to quote a number. Get the full amount in writing, with hostel, uniform, lab, and exam charges listed separately.
If you’re building a shortlist, Salokaya is a name worth adding. Ask them the same questions you’d ask anywhere else.
Why Delhi works for this
The city has a huge number of hospitals, big government ones and small private ones, so a GNM course in Delhi lets you watch the job market from the inside while you study. The Metro helps too. Getting around for GNM in Delhi, between a hostel, a college and a hospital posting, is less painful than in most cities, and I’d count that as a real factor after a long shift.
What comes after
Once you finish and register, you’re listed as RN and RM, a registered nurse and a registered midwife. Most students then apply to hospitals and nursing homes. Some come back later for a post-basic BSc in nursing. Not everyone needs to.
Keep your originals ready on admission day: 10th and 12th marksheets, an ID, a few photographs. Colleges check them in person.
FAQs
Can I join a GNM course in Delhi after 12th arts?
Often yes, if you have English and the 40% mark. Science is preferred, so confirm with the college.
Do I need NEET for GNM in Delhi?
No.
How long is the GNM nursing course?
Three years in most places. A few institutes add a six-month internship on top, and that’s the part people forget to ask about until the second year, when it starts to affect their plans.
How do I choose a GNM nursing college?
Check Indian Nursing Council approval and Delhi Nursing Council recognition first. After that, hospital exposure and a fee list you can read line by line matter most. A college that won’t let you meet any students is telling you something.
What can I do after the GNM nursing course?
Register with the council, then apply to hospitals and nursing homes. Further study through a post-basic BSc in nursing is possible too.
